Oceanside Psychology Group
Are you feeling stuck in emotions like shame, fear, sadness, or anger? Does it feel like your emotions control you, not the other way around?

Do you have an inner critic that makes you feel like you’re never enough or doubt yourself?

Are you having trouble letting go of lingering, unresolved hurt or resentment related to someone from your past? Does this unfinished business make it hard to move on or cause you to feel a feeling more intensely than current situations might warrant?

On the opposite end of the continuum, do you feel numb and cut off from your emotions? Maybe you distract yourself from feeling emotions you don’t want to feel or you deny or push them down in some way.

Does having too much or too little emotion cause problems in your relationships? Maybe you find yourself stuck in repetitive self-defeating patterns in your most important relationships that leave you feeling scared, depressed, anxious, or alone.

Transforming stuck, painful, and unhelpful emotions is our specialty.

Whether you come on your own, with your partner, or with a family member, we can help you approach difficult emotions in a way that will support you in transforming them. With our attuned, caring, empathic approach, we will guide you in exploring your feelings at a pace that feels safe for you. We will help you quiet internal critics and work through and heal relationship wounds so that you can experience yourself, others, and the world differently. Although we can’t forget our past, with the right support, we can change how we carry our past with us. We invite you to contact us so that we can help you work through painful emotions and experiences, and come out the other side.

At Oceanside Psychology Group, our Burnaby psychologists and therapists offer a range of counselling and psychotherapy services for teen and adult clients.

We are an Emotion-Focused Therapy practice.

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) is an evidence-based approach to treatment that is based on more than 30 years of research by leading psychologists Drs. Leslie Greenberg, Robert Elliott, Jeanne Watson, Sandra Paivio, and others. It is an effective treatment for unresolved feelings related to family of origin and influential others from our past (“unfinished business”), as well as depression, social anxiety, generalized anxiety, emotion dysregulation, low self-esteem, internal conflicts, and posttraumatic stress difficulties resulting from complex interpersonal trauma, including childhood abuse and neglect.

EFT is based on the belief that emotions are adaptive. Emotions tell us what is important to us and they are connected to our basic needs. Therefore, when we habitually experience too much or too little emotion, we become disconnected from the useful information they contain and we often don’t get our needs met in a satisfying way. EFT is designed to help people access, deepen, explore, express, transform, and more flexibly manage their emotions, so that they can have more of the emotions they want, less of the emotions they don’t want, and use their emotions as a compass to live a more satisfying, meaningful life.

We also offer other evidence-based approaches that fit you.

We understand that each person’s life story, experience, and emotional landscape is unique. You are the expert of your experience. We will join and collaborate with you to find an approach that feels right to you and that addresses your unique needs.

In addition to EFT, our clinic is pleased to offer a range of other evidence-based therapies, including, but not limited to:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)-Informed Treatment
  • Mindfulness-Based Approaches
  • Prolonged Exposure Therapy
