Individual Counselling

Therapy is a journey of discovery. Similar to travelling, we can’t leave a place until we arrive at it.

Life can be challenging. Feelings can be difficult.
None of us want to navigate them alone.

Most of us will, at some point, wish we could feel differently, either within ourselves or in our most important relationships. Many, if not most, human struggles are a result of what we feel or how we respond to our feelings. If you’re wondering whether you would benefit from individual therapy, these questions may help guide you:
.

  • Do you often find yourself caught in a familiar painful or destructive feeling? Does it feel like your emotions control you, rather than the other way around?
  • Are you often anxious, upset, angry, or depressed?
  • Do you have an inner critic that makes you doubt yourself or feel like you’re not good enough?
  • Do you often feel empty or numb?
  • Do you regularly try to distract from painful feelings or otherwise avoid them or push them down?
  • Do you have difficulty expressing yourself and find that this negatively impacts your confidence, relationships, or growth?
  • Are you bothered by lingering bad feelings related to people from your past?
  • Do you struggle in relationships?
  • Have you experienced trauma that feels unresolved?
  • Do you notice that you start to feel better for a while, but then the same distressing feelings eventually come back again?

We Can Help You Come Out The Other Side of Painful Feelings and Experiences.

At Oceanside Psychology Group, we offer individual counselling and psychotherapy to teens and adults.

If you answered “yes” to any of the questions above, you’re probably not living a life as satisfying, meaningful, and fulfilling as you could be. Your happiness and excitement for life may feel dampened and replaced by frustration, helplessness, anxiety, or hopelessness. You may have strengths and successes and not even notice them, with a critical internal dialogue reminding you of the ways you’re not enough or making you doubt yourself. Having learned to hide parts of yourself, you might feel like you don’t know who you are anymore and perhaps never did. You may feel alone in your struggles and wonder whether things will ever change. We want to help you live a happier life and feel freed up to pursue your goals and dreams.

Individual therapy can help you by creating a safe space for you to explore parts of you and your experience that have previously been ignored, dismissed, or invalidated in some way. In the context of a warm, empathic therapeutic relationship:

  • You can heal the past, understand the present, and reclaim parts of you that were previously disowned or unknown.
  • You can learn to trust, accept, and value yourself more, increasing your self-confidence and excitement for life.
  • You can learn to have more of the emotions you want and less of the emotions you don’t want.
  • You can gain clarity on your situation and discover what you need to live a happier, more fulfilling life.

Our Practice Areas

At Oceanside Psychology Group, we offer individual counselling and psychotherapy to teens (13-18, inclusive) and adults. We specialize in addressing difficulties related to:

  • Complex interpersonal trauma/PTSD (e.g., childhood physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect)
  • Adult interpersonal trauma (e.g., sexual assault)
  • Unresolved anger, resentment, and hurt related to family of origin and influential others (“unfinished business”)
  • Blocked or suppressed feelings
  • Depression
  • Social anxiety
  • Generalized anxiety
  • Self-criticism
  • Low self-esteem / insecurities (e.g., low self-confidence, fear of abandonment)
  • Grief and loss
  • Emotion dysregulation (feeling too much, too little, or both)
  • Disordered eating behaviours and body image
  • Identity
  • Relationships

We understand that emotions can hurt and that many hurts can’t be seen. With the right support, we can arrive at these places, walk through them in a way that transforms the feeling that hurts or holds us back, and change the way we experience ourselves, others, and the world.
